Central Park Karen‘ wants to tell her side of the story on what happened after her May 2020 encounter with Christian Cooper went viral.

Amy Cooper (no relation) recounted her experience to Newsweek with claims that Christian, a science writer and Black man, allegedly yelled at her and told her to leave an area where dogs were required to be on leashes.

According to Cooper, Christian threatened her by saying, “If you’re going to do what you want, I’m going to do what I want, but you’re not going to like it,” meaning that he would record her on his phone.  She took Christian’s gesture as a threat and “completely panicked.”

“I was a female, alone in a secluded area of Central Park, with a man yelling at me and threatening me,” she said. “As a victim of a sexual assault in my late teens, I was completely panicked for my safety and wellbeing.”

She then claimed that Christian, who was birdwatching, attempted to lure her dog with treats despite not owning a dog himself, which she found suspicious and concerning.  She pointed out that Christian had a history of aggressive behavior in Central Park and allegedly threatened three other dog owners.

Cooper then admitted to falsely reporting feeling “aggressively threatened” by Christian during the incident in a distressed call to a 911 dispatcher.

After being fired from her job, she claims she went into “survival mode” once the video went viral.  She further claimed she had to issue a public apology from a PR company.

She said, “But it did nothing.  I was forced into hiding.”

Cooper mentioned facing continuous death threats and prolonged unemployment after the video surfaced.  She attempted to reach out to Christian directly but received no response.  Additionally, she emphasized that she does not consider herself a racist.

A month after the incident, Christian appeared on CBS This Morning and described Cooper’s action as throwing a “race grenade” at him.  In the video, Cooper was heard telling the 911 dispatcher, “There’s an African American man threatening my life.”

He told Gayle King, “She was going to tap into a deep, deep dark vein of racism, of racial bias that runs through this country … and has for centuries.”
